It’s the end of July, two months into summer in Japan. Again, we have another tasty high-resolution Japan Photo Of The Month photo and wallpaper.

The humidity in summer here in Japan is very high, so this month we travelled to the Nagano Alps, the high altitude reduced the humidity and during our stay, we found a gorgeous swimming area in the Atera Gorge in the mountains.

The gorge is near the Nakasendo, a historic route between old Kyoto and Edo (modern day Tokyo)

This is a High Dynamic Range (HDR) image, made from a composite of 3 photos. It gives a more realistic feel of what this scene actually looked like. See a larger version at JapanTravelMate.com’s Flickr set.

I love the clear blue water and the amazing colours. Did you swim here? How cold was the water?

Thanks JA. Yes we swam there, the rainy season had just ended in Nagano Prefecture, so there was a lot of water in the river. The water was quite cold, but not cold enough to stop us or the others swimming!
