Some travellers are very methodical luggage packers. They make lists of what to include and are forever packing and repacking for the most compact luggage possible. Here’s one tip that will save you a bit of weight… if you’re heading to Japan and plan to stay at hotels or capsule hotels… leave your toiletries at home.
At all Japanese business hotels, along with green tea and a yukata, your bathroom will be supplied with all the toiletries you need.
The culture of the salary-man in Japan dictates that if the boss is going out drinking all night, then you are going to join him… even if that means not being able to catch your train home at 3AM. So to continue the life of convenience that is Japan, you’ll find these toiletries at every business hotel:
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Body soap
- Shower cap
- Hair brush
- Razor
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
Some of the toothbrushes magically contain toothpaste in the bristles themselves, so if you don’t see toothpaste, just wet the toothbrush and start brushing.
At more expensive hotels you can of course expect higher quality toiletries. Some hotels offer additional items, such as nail files, ear cleaning swabs, makeup remove and more.
This photo is from the Hotel New Hankyu Osaka near Umeda station in Osaka (across the road from the ultra convenient two Family Mart convenience stores on one block). I recommend this place if you’re looking for a cheap but quality hotel in Osaka.
